Parshas Matot-Masei

The 5 Kings –
Rectifying the Concealed Sparks of Holiness
Inspired by the teaching of Harav Yitzchak Ginsburgh and Rabbi Moshe Genuth

This parsha tells of the last battle Moshe as leader of  Klol Yisroel. The battle  was against the 5- evil Kings of the Midian. A deeper understanding of the events reveals just what was accomplished as a result of the battle.

Where other Nations are limited  to the mazel (the deterministic down flow of the emanating light/energy of the constellations), Israel is not.  We say that Israels’ is beyond the mazel, it has a spiritual connection that is beyond all limitation to the highest spiritual realm.This is what makes the process of tshuvah possible; to be able to go beyond the natural limitations of the universe, beyond the normal boundaries of time and space, and thereby effect change, tshuvah at a higher ethereal level.   This Parshas Matot holds an interesting revelation of the ‘opening of the gates of tshuvah’ that will usher in the Final Redemption.

An essential concept in Torah is the transforming of darkness to light. We say that it is in the darkness ( the evil and impurity) that lay the powerful sparks of Tikun (rectification and holiness) . It is our purpose to find and ignite these concealed sparks to bring about tshuvah, transformation….tikun olam (rectification of the world). This is the power held within the process of  ‘revealing the concealed sparks of holiness’.

The Battle of the  5 Kings of Midian was the last act of Moshe before blessing the Nation and dying .The 5 Kings represented  the evil in the world.  The nation of Midyan is considered here the ‘sitra achra or opposing force(s)’.  And so the 5 Kings (Midianites) in this parsha are the sitra achra, the opposing forces that counter the Light of the 5 Books of Torah.

Thus, Moshe and Israel’s winning of the War of the 5 Kings (of evil) open the spiritual channels to then make it possible to do tshuvah, to conquer and rectify the evil contained within these 5 entities (evil kingdoms), and  thereby further enabling us to bring about the Final Redemption, Mashiach.
